Dear Team

I've just read the newsletter - thanks for sending it. One question, though.

You say that because Apple are withdrawing support from the iPad 1 you aren't permitted to send updates via Appstore. Does this effectively leave me with an expensive second-hand doorstop? Or will I still be receiving the chart updates. I seem to recall that SD might not work without uptodate charts

Much as I admire the technical expertise of Apple, my bank account doesn't run to the cost of the new iOS7 - it's why I bought a second hand iPad1.

I've come here seeking similar clarification regarding the use of an ipad 1 for SD. It would be helpful if someone from the SD team can clarify exactly what will work or not work once support for the ipad 1 is withdrawn.

I'm very much hoping that SD will continue to function, having paid £750 in September 2010 for an ipad 1, I don't feel that at just over 3 years old it is ready for the scrap heap. SD has always worked faultlessly on my antique ipad - there is certainly no reason to upgrade from a performance perspective.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm not a member of the SD team but I think what the newsletter is saying is this:

There will not be any more program updates available but you will, of course, still be able to download chart updates from SD. The distribution of the program is through Apple whereas the data is disseminated by SkyDemon.

Thanks Chris, that's helpful information. Whilst it would be a disappointment to lose out on programme updates, the ability to update maps and database information is critical.

I suppose we have to put this down to Apple's policy of ending product support as early as possible, although I think considering hardware to be obsolete and unsupported at 3 years old is rather greedy.

SkyDemon will continue to work for the foreseeable future on your iPad 1 but technology moves on, and at some point we will need to make changes to our chart format to facilitate new features. Since we can't predict the future, the last version installed on the iPad 1 will eventually no longer work with new chart updates.

We will hold out as long as possible though.
